Lindsay Dee Lohan (born July 2, 1986) is an American actress and pop music singer. Lohan started in show business as a child fashion model for magazine advertisement and television commercials. At age 10, she began her acting career in a soap opera; at 11, she made her motion picture debut by playing identical twins in Disney's 1998 remake of The Parent Trap.

Lohan rose to stardom with her leading roles in the films Freaky Friday, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, Mean Girls and Herbie: Fully Loaded. Her subsequent roles include appearances in A Prairie Home Companion and Bobby. In 2004, Lohan launched a second career in pop music yielding the albums Speak (2004) and A Little More Personal (Raw) (2005).

Lohan has received media attention apart from her acting and singing careers. Her multiple arrests and struggles with alcohol addiction and drug use have become regular tabloid news.

Family life

Lohan was born on East 236th Street in the Woodlawn section of the Bronx and grew up in Merrick and Cold Spring Harbor on Long Island. She is the eldest child of Donata "Dina" (née Sullivan), a former Rockette, and Michael Douglas Lohan, Sr., a onetime actor. Lohan has three younger siblings, all of whom are actor-models: brother Michael Jr., whom she affectionately calls "Punk," appeared with her in The Parent Trap as the "Lost Boy at Camp"; sister Aliana had a small role in Freaky Friday, as did brother Dakota, the youngest Lohan child, whom she once saved from drowning. Most recently she starred alongside Jane Fonda in "Georgia Rule".

Lohan is of Irish and Italian heritage and was raised as a Catholic.[1] Her maternal family were "well known Irish Catholic stalwarts" in Merrick, with her great-grandfather, John L Sullivan, being a co-founder of the Pro-life Party in Long Island.[2] In 2005, Lohan explained to a TEENick audience that she had decided to use Morgan as her middle name because it sounded more professional.

Lohan attended public schools on Long Island, including Sanford H. Calhoun High School.[3] She finished her studies at home[4] through Laurel Springs School[5] of Ojai, California.

Her family was financially comfortable. Her mother was a Wall Street analyst before becoming Lohan's manager.[citation needed] Dina also claimed that she worked as a Rockette, though Radio City Music Hall records have not verified this claim.[6][7]

Michael Lohan inherited his family's pasta business, which he later sold to trade in futures (briefly becoming President of New York Futures Traders).[8] Sentenced to four years in prison in the late 1980s, he spent much of his daughter's preteen years in prison for securities fraud. More recently, he worked as an investment banker, securing funding for independent films.[9] In 2005, he was sent back to prison for nearly two years, released in March 2007, for "aggravated unlicensed driving" and attempted assault.[10][11] Michael currently works with Teen Challenge. [12]

In December 2005, Michael and Dina Lohan signed a separation agreement.[13] In August 2007, Lohan's parents announced that their divorce proceedings had been finalized.[14][15]

Acting career

Early career

Lohan began her career with Ford Models at age three, but found little work as a fashion model.[16] She persisted and eventually appeared in more than 100 print ads for Toys "R" Us.[17] She also modeled for Calvin Klein Kids (usually with siblings Michael and Ali) and Abercrombie Kids. Through young adulthood, Lohan was featured in such magazines as Vogue, Elle, Bliss (UK), Хай Клуб (High Club, Bulgaria), and Blenda (Japan).

Lohan's first auditions for television work did not go well; by the time she tried out for a Duncan Hines commercial, she told her mother that she would give up if she did not get the job.[16] She was hired, and went on to appear in over 60 commercials, including a Jell-O spot with Bill Cosby. Her ad work led to roles in soap operas, and she was already considered a show-business veteran[17] in 1996 when she landed the role of Alexandra "Alli" Fowler on Another World, "where she delivered more dialogue than any other 10-year-old in daytime serials" of the time.[18]

Lohan gave up Another World for the big screen when director Nancy Meyers cast her to play the dual roles of the estranged twin sisters who try to reunite their long-divorced parents (Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson) in the 1998 remake of The Parent Trap. Hired in 1997 at age 10, Lohan was 11 when filming began in England and California (in Los Angeles and the Napa Valley). "I left school for eight months," she said. "When I came back, my friends [asked], 'Where'd you go?' I said, 'My family and I went on a long vacation.' Then the movie came out, and they were, like, 'Um, Lindsay? That's you in Parent Trap,' and I said, 'Oh, yeah. I also did this movie while we were gone.'"[9] Trap was well-received for a family comedy, bringing in US million worldwide.[19] Film critic Janet Maslin found Lohan's dual performances so forceful "that she seems to have been taking shy violet lessons from Sharon Stone."[20] Critic Kenneth Turan called Lohan "the soul of this film as much as Hayley Mills was of the original, and … she is more adept than her predecessor at creating two distinct personalities".[21]

Signed by Disney to a three-film contract, Lohan was offered the role of Penny in Inspector Gadget but turned it down.[citation needed] Later, she starred in two original television movies, Life-Size (2000) (with Tyra Banks) and Get a Clue (2002). She also played Bette Midler's daughter in the first episode of the short-lived series, Bette (2000), but Lohan, then 14, quit when the production moved from New York to Los Angeles. In 2001, she hosted the ABC-TV commercial series commemorating Walt Disney's 100th birthday during a rebroadcast of The Parent Trap.

Following a brief hiatus, Lohan won a lead role in another Disney remake: Freaky Friday (2003), starring Jamie Lee Curtis. Through 2005, Friday was Lohan's biggest commercial film success, earning US0 million worldwide.[22]

Career development

In 2004, Lohan was given the lead in two films, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen (her first feature that was not a remake) and Paramount's Mean Girls, both released in 2004. Drama Queen was a modest success at the box office, grossing about US million, but was a failure with critics. "Though still a promising star, Lohan will have to do a little penance before she's forgiven for Confessions," Robert K. Elder wrote.[23]

Far more successful was Mean Girls, her first PG-13 (and first non-Disney) film. Her breakout lead performance[24] pushed the critical and commercial hit to gross US8 million worldwide, "cementing her status as the new teen movie queen," wrote Brandon Gray.[25] "Lohan dazzles us once more," said Steve Rhodes. "The smartly written script is a perfect match for her intelligent brand of comedy."[26] Mean Girls was scripted by Tina Fey and featured several alumni of Saturday Night Live; Lohan was asked to host the show three times, in 2004, 2005, and 2006.

In 2005, Lohan became the first living person to have a "My Scene Goes Hollywood" doll released by Mattel. She also voiced herself in the direct-to-DVD feature film based on the dolls.[27]

Lohan returned to Disney for Herbie: Fully Loaded (2005), the fifth film in the Herbie series. Her popularity allowed her to choose from a wider variety of projects; Lohan felt Herbie would help her make the transition into more grown-up roles.[4] "In most of my other films, I was in high school," she said. "Here, [my character is] just out of college. It's nice to be able to do something that I think will be acceptable to the fan base I've accumulated from my Disney movies, but subconsciously they'll see me getting older and maturing."[28] Fully Loaded earned 4,146,816 worldwide.[29]

Her next film in wide release, Just My Luck, opened in May 2006 to poor reviews and earned only million worldwide.[30] The following month, A Prairie Home Companion, in limited release ended its run with ,648,948 globally.[31] "Lohan rises to the occasion, delivering a rock-the-house version of 'Frankie and Johnny'," wrote Peter Travers.[32] Lohan completed filming the independent Emilio Estevez film, Bobby, opposite Elijah Wood, in December 2005; the film débuted at the Venice Film Festival on September 5, 2006, and was released in theaters on November 23, 2006, though it earned a weak ,560,892 worldwide with mixed reviews. She then appeared in Chapter 27 as a John Lennon fan who befriends Mark David Chapman (Jared Leto) on the day he murders the singer. It began filming in New York on January 9, 2006, and had wrapped by March.

Lohan was voted #10 on the list of "100 Sexiest Women" by readers of FHM.[33] Maxim placed her at #3 on its 2006 Hot 100 list.[34] In 2007, Lohan placed at #1 on the Maxim "Hot 100".[35][36]

In February 2007, shortly after admitting herself to a medical rehabilitation facility, Lohan relinquished the role of Hester Worsley in a film adaptation of Oscar Wilde's A Woman of No Importance. The role then passed to Jessica Biel.[37]

On May 11, 2007, Georgia Rule was released in which Lohan starred alongside Felicity Huffman and Jane Fonda. The film — whose production received adverse publicity when a letter from a studio executive to Lohan criticizing her professionalism was made public — received mostly negative reviews. It grossed US.7 million at the box office in its opening weekend and to date has grossed over US million worldwide.

On July 24, 2007, Lohan - in the wake of her arrest withdrew from a scheduled appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno to promote her starring role as a stripper in the film I Know Who Killed Me. The film premiered "to an abysmal .5 million"[38] and earned Lohan two nominations for worst actress at the Golden Raspberry Awards. She came in first and second, tying with herself.

Entertainment Weekly quoted the head of a major film studio as saying, "Her career was over long before she had these troubles... Right now, she'd have to pay a studio to get herself into a movie."[38] The article continues, "There's the L.A. bar scene that serves underage stars and Hollywood's compulsion to turn child actors into products, plus a frenzied 21st-century media culture that has made Lohan and other celebs into exotic prey in flashbulb cages." ABC News quoted publicist Michael Levine as calling Lohan unemployable "for the next 18 months." The head of a talent agency agreed, noting that her personal issues likely made the insurance and other costs required for any film production to proceed prohibitively expensive.[39] James Robinson, the producer of Georgia Rule, stated he would still like to work with her. "She's a good person who's making some bad choices. She needs time to get the proper medical care, but when she's in the right emotional state, I'd put her in a movie right away.... She's probably one of the most talented young women in the movie business today."

Lohan plans to travel and study in Europe after leaving rehab. Her mother told Us Weekly that "She wants to go abroad and study in school. We'll see what happens."[40]

In the February 25, 2008 Spring Fashion edition of New York, Lohan re-created Marilyn Monroe's final photo shoot, known as the Last Sitting, including nudity[41]. Her mother said doing the photo shoot was an "honor." [42]

Lohan is set to make a cameo in an upcoming music video for the single "Everyone Nose" by Pharrell Williams-fronted band N*E*R*D. A song about the restroom drug usage of young party-goers, the video also has appearances by friends Cory Kennedy, Samantha Ronson, and rapper Kanye West. Shot in early April, a sneak preview of the video leaked onto Internet blogs in May.[43]

Return to acting

Lohan was going to star in the movie "Poor Things", but had to withdraw form the role due to scheduling conflicts.[44]

Upon leaving rehab in 2007, Lohan began work on the tango biopic Dare to Love Me, the film's release date is scheduled to be sometime in 2008.

In late February 2008, it was announced that Lohan would be joining the cast of Ye Olde Times alongside Jack Black [45], however, it was later announced that Lohan is no longer a part of the movie.[46].

E! News has also recently reported Lohan's involvement in the movie Manson Girls playing Manson Family cult member Nancy Pitman [47], however, she has recently withdrawn from this role to pursue other offers.[48]

It was recently reported that Lohan has been cast to star in the forthcoming film comedy "Labor Pains", Lohan will play a young woman who pretends to be pregnant to avoid being fired[49].The film is slated to start filming in early June 2008.[50]

Lohan made a guest appearance on the season 2 finale of ABC's Ugly Betty which aired on May 22, 2008; she played an old schoolmate of America Ferrera's character Betty Suarez. Lohan is also expected to appear in five episodes of Ugly Betty next season.[51]

Music career

Hoping to become a "triple threat" (actor/model/singer) like her idol, Ann-Margret, Lohan began by showcasing her singing talents through her films.[52] For the Freaky Friday soundtrack, she sang the closing theme, "Ultimate"; she also recorded four songs for the Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen soundtrack.

Producer Emilio Estefan, Jr. signed Lohan to a five-album production deal in 2002. "The minute I heard her sing, I knew she was gifted," he said, "and [she] has an incredible ability to connect with her audience. I am very excited to be working with her." Lohan — who said she was "extremely excited" — added, "I am surrounded by a group of very talented people."[53] Two years later, Lohan signed a recording contract with Casablanca Records, headed by "diva-maker" Tommy Mottola.Lohan is currently signed with Motown Records.

Speak

Her debut album, Speak, was released in December 2004, and peaked at number four on the Billboard 200. By early 2005, it was certified Platinum. Though primarily a pop album, Speak was introduced with the single "Rumors", described by Rolling Stone as "a bass-heavy, angry club anthem".[54] Its sexually suggestive video reached number one on MTV's Total Request Live and was nominated for Best Pop Video at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards. "Rumors" eventually earned a Gold certification in America.

The album spawned the second single "Over" and the third single "First", which was featured in Lohan's 2005 film Herbie: Fully Loaded. The music video also featured Herbie the Love Bug. Both music videos were directed by Jake Nava, who also directed the music video for "Rumors."

"[W]ith just two hit films under her belt, Lohan decided it was time to turn [herself] into a multimedia, cross-platform star," wrote Stephen Thomas Erlewine of All Music Guide. "And so Speak was recorded quickly and rushed into the stores". He called her music "a blend of old-fashioned, Britney-styled dance-pop and the anthemic, arena rock sound pioneered by fellow tween stars Hilary Duff and Ashlee Simpson. [However,] Lohan stands apart from the pack with her party-ready attitude and her husky voice".[55]

A Little More Personal (Raw)

Main article: A Little More Personal (Raw)

In December 2005, her second album, A Little More Personal (Raw), debuted at number 20 on the Billboard 200 chart, but fell under the top 100 within six weeks. Reviews were unfavorable; critics called the album a "slick pop production."[56] Slant magazine called it "contrived ... for all the so-called weighty subject matter, there's not much meat on these bones."[57] Still, A Little More Personal (Raw) was certified Gold on January 18, 2006. The music video for the album's first single, "Confessions of a Broken Heart (Daughter to Father)" — directed by Lohan and featuring the acting debut of her sister, Ali — was a dramatization of the pain Lohan says her family has suffered at the hands of her father.[58] She said "It's kind of offensive... I hope he sees the positive side of the video rather than the negative."

The album's second single was supposed to be "I Live for the Day." Radio promos singles were pressed and released and sent to radio stations. However due to Lohan's schedule, she was unable to promote or support the single as she did with her previous efforts. Eventually, since the single received absolutely no radio airplay or support, and the disappointing chart position and sales of the album, Casablanca Records cancelled "I Live for the Day" and moved forward with "If It’s Alright" as the second single. However plans for releasing "If It’s Alright" were later cancelled, as well as all other singles and promotion with the album. Therefore, A Little More Personal (Raw) was not as successful as her previous album, Speak. A Little More Personal (Raw), with little promotion, was still certified gold by the RIAA on January 18, 2006 after debuting on the Billboard 200 at #20, while "Speak" went platinum after debuting at #4.

Untitled third studio album

Lohan has promised a third studio album on multiple occasions.[59][60][61][62].The album will be released early Fall 2008[63] Lohan said that she wants the album to be dance, hip-hop, and R&B[64], she also stated that she wants it to be kind of Kylie Minogue-meets-Rihanna.[65]

She is working with J. R. Rotem,[66] Stargate, Ne-Yo,[67]Akon, Pharrell Williams, and Snoop Dogg.[68] The album's first single is "Bossy".[69]

Lohan will soon debut the entire album on KIIS-FM [radio show] with host Ryan Seacrest (who heard most of the album, and said "I've heard some of it, I like what I've heard so far").[68]

Business

Lohan is launching her new line of leggings called 6126.[70]

Activism

Lohan (who initially appeared frequently on PETA's Worst Dressed List for wearing fur) publicly announced she was no longer "tolerant" of fur and was subsequently cut from the list. When educated about the controversial process of fur farming, Lohan took a stand against the industry, later telling Dan Matthews of her plan "to weed the real fur from [her] wardrobe."[71]

Personal life

Lohan has been a frequent attendee at various nightclubs and social events - at times being photographed with nightlife notables such as Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. Responding to the media's portrayal of Lohan as a "party girl", she commented, "People say, 'Oh, she goes out and she parties'. No, we are just going out and having fun."[52]

Lohan's car accidents in 2004-2006 were widely reported. The first, August 2004 in Studio City, California, was a minor rear-ender, though the victims threatened to sue her in 2005.[72] Another, October 2005 in West Hollywood, occurred when Lohan struck a van. Police determined that the van's driver made an illegal U-turn.[73][74] November 2006 in Los Angeles, Lohan suffered minor injuries when a paparazzo who was following her for a photograph hit her car. Police called the crash intentional, but prosecutors said there was not enough evidence to file criminal charges.[75][76] When VH1 named Lohan "Big 'It' Girl" for its 'Big' in '05 Awards in December, it was, Lohan quipped, "because being Big in '05 means getting in three car crashes in one year, people!".[77]

Lohan was hospitalized twice in January 2006. In the first incident, she cut herself on a broken teacup while in London; in the second incident, she suffered an asthma attack while in Miami, Florida.[78]

In an interview published in the March 2006 issue of Allure, Lohan said she hoped to be taken seriously as an actress, adding, "I hate it when people call me a teen queen." She addressed the numerous romantic rumors ("I know now that I don't need a boyfriend.") and her weight loss ("I will say that I went through a phase. I lost weight when I was in the hospital, and then I wanted to keep it off."). Lohan said 2005 "felt like five lifetimes because I've grown up a lot".[79]At around the same time, she is reported as having looked into the teachings of Kabbalah Centre, saying, "All of us need something. You have to grab on to whatever gets you through."[80]

On July 25, 2006, the filming of Georgia Rule was delayed while Lohan was admitted to a Los Angeles hospital for treatment of overheating and dehydration,[81] her third hospital visit in 2006. In a letter to Lohan and others associated with the production that was later made public, James G. Robinson, CEO of the film's production company, Morgan Creek Productions, wrote:

"You and your representatives have told us that your various late arrivals and absences from the set have been the result of illness; today we were told it was 'heat exhaustion'. We are well aware that your ongoing all night heavy partying is the real reason for your so-called 'exhaustion'."[82]

Lohan's fourth 2006 hospital visit occurred in September when she was treated at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City after breaking her wrist.[83]

On January 18, 2007, Lohan checked herself in to the Wonderland Center[84] rehabilitation facility in West Hollywood's Laurel Canyon area. Through her representative, she issued a statement saying, "I have made a proactive decision to take care of my personal health."[85] In a later interview, Lohan said, "It's so weird that I went to rehab. I always said I would die before I went to rehab." But she added that, even after regularly attending meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous, "I don't know that I'm necessarily an addict."[86]

Lohan was ranked #3 on the Forbes list of Young Hollywood Top-Earners with million.

May 26, 2007 arrest

On May 26, 2007, Lohan lost control of her Mercedes-Benz convertible and ran the vehicle up a curb. Police found "additional contraband" in the car - which was tentatively identified as a "usable" amount of cocaine. After receiving treatment for minor injuries, Lohan was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.[87] Two days later, Lohan entered the Promises Treatment Centers[88] rehabilitation facility in Malibu,[89] staying for 45 days.[90] A week later, on July 20, Lohan, accompanied by her attorney, surrendered herself to be fingerprinted and photographed. She was released on her own recognizance and assigned a court date of August 24.[91]

July 24, 2007 arrest

In the pre-dawn hours of July 24, 2007, the Santa Monica police received a 911 call from a car being driven by Michelle Peck - whose daughter, Tracie Rice had left her employment as Lohan's personal assistant several hours previously. Peck reported that she was being chased by a white GMC and feared for her safety.[92] The police later found Peck and Lohan having a "heated debate" in the parking lot of the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Lohan refused to take a breathalyzer test, but agreed to other field sobriety tests. After failing these tests, she was taken to a police station where her blood alcohol level was tested at between 0.12 and 0.13 percent - above the California legal limit of 0.08 percent. While conducting a search, the police found a small amount of cocaine in her pocket.[93][94][95]

Lohan was booked on felony charges of possession of cocaine and transportation of a narcotic - in addition to misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license.[96] A few hours after Lohan's release on ,000 bail, her attorney, Blair Berk, issued a statement:
“ Addiction is a terrible and vicious disease. Since Lindsay transitioned to outpatient care, she has been monitored on a SCRAM ["Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitor,"][97] bracelet and tested daily in order to support her sobriety. Throughout this period, I have received timely and accurate reports from the testing companies. Unfortunately, late yesterday I was informed that Lindsay had relapsed. The bracelet has now been removed. She is safe, out of custody and presently receiving medical care.[98] ”

Access Hollywood host Billy Bush said he received an email from Lohan on July 24 in which she stated:
“ I am innocent... did not do drugs they're not mine. I was almost hit by my assistant Tarin's mom. I appreciate everyone giving me my privacy.[99] ”

CBS News reported that some days later, Lohan checked into Cirque Lodge,[100] a drug rehab, alcohol and addiction treatment center in Sundance, Utah.[101] This represented Lohan's third rehab program in 2007.

On August 14, 2007, Tracie Rice filed a lawsuit against Lohan at Los Angeles County Superior Court for assault and negligence for the incident of July 24.[102]

On August 23, 2007, it was announced that Lohan would serve one day in jail and 10 days community service for both her DUI arrests. She will also be on probation for a maximum of three years. Lohan was also ordered to complete an 18-month alcohol education program, pay hundreds of dollars in fines and must complete a three-day county coroner program in which she’ll visit a morgue and talk to victims of drunk drivers. “It is clear to me that my life has become completely unmanageable because I am addicted to alcohol and drugs,” Lohan said in a statement released by publicist Leslie Sloane Zelnik.[103] She began her community service at the American Red Cross in Pomona, California[104]

Relationships

Lohan and Hilary Duff launched a public war of words in 2002 when they simultaneously dated Aaron Carter; the feud continued over the years. However, in 2007, Lohan and Duff decided to put the 5-year-old dispute behind them and become friends.[105]. Duff said: "We are both adults and whatever happened, happened when we were young. It's over."

In May 2004, Lohan started dating Wilmer Valderrama (That 70's Show), However, on November 12, 2004 it was announced that Lohan and Valderrama had broken up.[106][107] "They have broken up, but are still friends," Valderrama's publicist, Heidi Slan, told The Associated Press. Lohan then started dating Harry Morton on July 2, 2006, their relationship ended in October 2006[108]. Lohan then briefly dated Calum Best in 2007 [109]. Also, in August 2007, Lohan went to Utah Crique Loge to seek treatment. During her stay, Lohan met Riley Giles, a 25-year-old snowboarder, and while Lohan and Giles started dating, they ended their relationship late November 2007[110]. Lohan's mother, Dina Lohan, said "He [Riley] took desperate measures to hurt Lindsay because she broke up with him".

In 2008 Lohan and Samantha Ronson were seen kissing and holding hands. On May 27, 2008, Us Magazine reported that Lohan's father, Michael, told them that his daughter's relationship with Ronson is "evident to anyone with half a brain."[111] Mr. Lohan, however, insists that the quote was taken out of context, and was "twisted and misrepresented."[112] Both Ronson and Lohan have insisted that the relationship is just friendship. [113]
